We completed the design and build of a dedicated music and science facility for Hemel Hempstead School, including demolition of existing outdated accommodation.

The timber and steel framed SIPS structure, with precast upper floors and staircases, was clad with a brickwork and Trespa rainscreen. Aluminium windows & doors and a felt roofing system completed the envelope.

Internally at ground floor level, a large performance space was provided alongside individual music practice rooms, requiring adherence to specific acoustic properties and insulation.

Underfloor heating was installed throughout, with passive ventilation systems generally in place for the classrooms. Heat recovery ventilation units in the music practice rooms, and specialist fume cupboard extract systems in the science rooms provided supplementary ventilation. A new gas service was installed to meet the increased loading requirements, and all life safety systems were integrated into the existing school’s systems.

Externally, new car-parking facilities were installed, and fencing locations arranged to permit the new building to be securely operated outside school hours.

Works were completed on time and within budget, and Apex were subsequently employed to construct the new Sports Hall for the School.
