This week, we were delighted to have Charis Wright-Hanson join us for a week of work experience. As part of her time with us, we asked her to write a snapshot on her experience and showcase what she has learnt. Below is what she had to say!
We also look forward to seeing the video version of the experience, which may end up being the first ever Apex TikTok…! Thanks for contributing so positively this week Charis, it has been a pleasure to have you, and we hope you come back to us seeking a career in construction.
“Construction is a man’s game” - common misconception!
In February 2025 Steph Harris, Sasha Silk, and Grace Poll, from Apex, visited my school to give a talk regarding their work in the construction industry. They wanted to inspire and educate girls to learn about the industry, and to correct the misconception that anything in construction is just for men. This sparked my interest as I honestly didn’t know much about it myself and I was eager to learn more, so I asked for work experience!
During my week at Apex, I had the opportunity to work with a range of professionals across different departments, gaining a well-rounded understanding of the construction industry. I was welcomed by Steph Harris, Head of New Business and Social Value, and Sasha Silk, Social Value Lead, who introduced me to the company. I received training on estimating from Festus Flaherty, Preconstruction Manager.
I visited a live site where Apex are delivering a care home for Lovett Care Limited, where I met Grace Poll, Management Trainee, Alex Corrigan, Site Manager, and Chris Watson, Project Manager, who taught me the day to day running of a site. I also shadowed Laura Downing, Senior Document Controller, who enabled me to compile a project directory and learned about design processes with Holly Hulme, Design Manager. On my final day, I worked alongside Tom Noctor, Management Trainee, who gave an overview of the commercial roles. Lastly, I attended a Future Leadership Group meeting, giving me insight into Apex’s community-focused values.
A huge thank you to Apex for giving me the opportunity to have work experience with them. I’ve learnt so much about what goes on behind the scenes of building projects, the various stages of the process and the intricacies of getting the job in the first place! It’s been inspiring to see how much effort you put into giving back to your community, having Sasha Silk as a designated social value lead.'
